Actuator Additional tension spring

Hi,

i am trying to fit the additional tension spring to my actuator but the v shaped bracket that mounts to the actuator base is no good

There is only one hole for the 2 studs that are on the back of the actuator housing. there is not enough material to drill an extra hole. am i meant to cut off the stud?

Also the formed loop for the spring to clip to on this plate is next to the other stud. I can fit stud or spring, not both? Have i the wrong bracket? as this one does not fit well at all?

any help would be appreciated.

Hi Miles,

i have had a look at that drawing and although it doesnt show the fixing of the L/H bracket very well it doesnt look like the same bracket as i have

There only seems to be one stud coming from the actuator housing - which by the way dont look like any LET actuator i have seen before? looks almost cast (unless its coated?)

The actuators i have had have 2 lengths of stud either side of the actuator rod, and these just dont fit the bracket.

i'd post a pic of the bracket i have but my garage has butchered it now to make it fit!!!!

also what sort of pre-tension is there on that actuator to allow enough thread on the R/H side of the wastegate linkage to fit 2 nuts, a plate and have thread sticking out? :shock:

The spring bracket I have has 2 holes that share the same bolts as the original actuator bracket to attach it to the turbo, infront of the standard actuator.

There should also be a single hole in the middle of the bracket for the actuator rod to go through. Above this single hole there should be a 'loop' sticking out to hook the end of the spring through.

Do you have a non standard actuator that has a seperate bracket and hence 2 studs from the actuator to attach it to the seperate bracket?

Miles i think you have just solved the mystery 8)

having uprated my actuator within the first month or 2 of owning the car i couldnt say what a std one looks like :wink:

The bracket i had did have 2 matching holes, one on either leg of the inverted v shape bracket. One large hole for the rod & an extra hole that formed part of the loop.

I do obviously have an aftermarket actuator with an additional heat deflector bracket - which is fixed by 2 additional studs - these clashed

so mystery solved - tbh the bracket design should be better as who running a phase kit has a std actuator :lol: :lol:

If your running a decent non original actuator you shouldn't need the spring :wink:

When I was playing with my actuator (Garrett -31) I tried the spring and to secure the spring at the actuator end I got a wing nut to use on one of the actuator to bracket mounting studs, then drill a small hole in the wing of the wing nut to hook the spring through. Simple and job done if you have a wing nut.....

the actuator that came with my hybrid is only rated for 12-14psi (not quite enough for P3.5!) and having moved house this week i dont have the spare £100+ for an uprated item so as a compromise i thought i'd add the spring :wink:

also having heard various stories of uprated items from well known vaux tuners not doing "what it says on the tin" i was unsure where to source such an item!!

Man, you can use almost every Garrett actuator :wink: the most of Garrett(T25,T3) turbos come with 0.6bar strength actuator(original K16 actuator is only 0.3bar strength). I use such actuator(not new, second hand part for 10euros :wink: ) with my fully stock K16 turbo, and i havent any problems to hold 1bar boost to redline(with original actuator there is a boost creep and i hold only 0.8bar to redline)....i use Lotec Phase 3 software and Apexi AVC-R boost controller. Only that you need to change is the actuator mounting plate to turbo housing, i use self made plate from 1.5mm stainless stell and its look very good and is very strong :wink:.
