oh man that sucks hard :(
do you rebuild the engine or selling everything?

Hello
I haven't found anyone to give me a good price on the car ( for the parts spent on it )
I am rebuilding the car , i am just thinking about my bottom block that i don't want to change ( serial number) but i had 87mm pistons on it
If i buy a special ordre of that one replacement pistons and rings , i don't think that would do it because the block is Scratch and damaged , i would have to go 87.5 or more or 88mm pistons to keep my block
Another thing would be to add cylinder rooms inside my cylinder and re use standard bore size pistons , but i don't have a lot of informations and research about that process .

My last option is i can get another stock Z20LET bottom block and use it with Z20LEH pistons .

i will have to clean it , re do the oil jets , rebalance all the bottom ( crack/flywheel/.... )

The block should be around tomorrow with the pistons , i need to gather some infos on if i should machine the Z20LEH pistons head or not .

Then i need to have my cylinder to be checked and inspected ...

Oh man, I'm sorry for that mess. :-(

What was the reason for this desaster - a melted spark plug?
I keep my fingers crossed that no more damage happend to the turbo charger.

Keep going...

Hello Averell

Looking at the damages , checking with a few peoples , so far , the ones that gave me a fast response time according to me pictures i showed them
was a " too Hot SPark plug"
The only theory i have is the spark plugs not beeing cold enough to the temperatures i took my engine cylinder on , when we are looking at all the pistons head , the valves , no marks , no points ...
I might be a dummy but it doesn't look like an ignition issues or fueling , injectors ... , i don't really know .

Will try to have the car up and running this week end or next week .

Christian

Hi Christian,

I think the spark plug is blame for the damaged piston and the following harms - possible that the plug wasn't fastened enough?
But maybe the injection nozzle was faulty, too?
I don't think about the fuel pump because all pistons would be damaged then.
Of course you need a new block with oil sprinkler to rebuild this engine.
What about the flat head, is it in a whole skin or needs it repair, too?
And what about the turbo charger, is it damaged by the shredded piston?
Do you use an exhaust temperature gauge?

Goog luck! ;-)

Hi Averell

Thank you for the kind words .

I am thinking about the spark plug as well , it was fasten enough ( i assume) they were replaced and changed at Klasen before the dyno and i raced and used the car in between , no problems .
The actual block ( broken one on the picture) has oil sprinkler in it already , i am working on a solution to get another complete block or i also have another Z20LET bottom block , i will have to re order nozzle spray and fit that block with Z20LEH pistons .
I am not sure about the flat head , i need to have it checked by a specialist .
I haven't looked at the turbo charger yet , might be damaged to ...
I use a Zeitronix device with active sensors as follow : EGT/ AFR/ Oil pressure/ Oil temp / BOOST and i as i was saying a few posts above ,the AFR and EGT values were good during the race , i am talking about the HIGHEST values at the HIGHEST revs ( peak values ) no ALARM were triggered .

Thanks

Xian

Mmmh ok,
if you use temperature measuring device it's all the more annoying that the engine broke.
I use a small display to monitor the exhaust temperatur but I don't have an alarm or something like that. The temperature lies between 870-920 °C in front of the turbocharger.
Since I've mounted a bigger Intercooler the intake temperatures is fallen from more than 80 °C to ~50°C and it's working in these hot days, too.
Of course my engine is not so strong but the mess is the same if something is going wrong!
I also monitor oil temperature (over 140 °C), oil pressure (less 2.5 bar) und boost (over 1,5 bar) and these gauges alarm by flashing lights or buzzer.
If your flat head wasn't suffering under temperature malfunction it should be able to rebuild, maybe you only have to grind the valves and it's ok?
One of the main problems next to the block ist the turbocharger - this could be very expensive - but according realictic the exhaut wheel will be destroyed.
So the charger must be dismantled and completely rebuild... what a mess. :-(

Hello

Thanks in advance for those who are taking a few seconds to read and answers on my thread .

I Was always wondering about few moddifications on the Z20 engine .

Inquiry #1
On the Z20LET Crank with the shaft balancer removed ( like my engine ) should i remove the Crown from my crack before get the lower bottom balanced ?
Could it help ? ( the Z20LEH engine is free of that kit , there for the crank is crown free)

Here crown on my Z20LET crank

Inquiry#2

LEH Cooling , Does it worth it or not ? ( as opposed to the standanrd Z20LET)

Inquiry#3

I have to re fit Oil jets/ Nozzle sprays on my next bottom block
I never saw anyone fitted the LEH (look a like) jets on the standard ZLET is it possible ?

I can't get my hands on a Z20LEH engine but would these kind be approprite with the oil way ?

Inquiry #4 Water ways and engine block reinforced

Would it be suitable and safe to get the water ways smaller in order to get the cylinder chamber stronger to avoid distortion with the extra heat ?

Hi Chris,

Inquiry 1: It doesn't matter if you left the shaft balance with or without the crown - most of the tuner here just remove the balancer and use the stabilisator (cage). In fact you could use the crank shaft from your LEH without the crown?

Inquiry 2: If your LET has got the extra water pump installed they often us the old system - someones change to the new cooling system and drop the pump - I use the old system with the installed extra pump and it's working very good.

Inquiry 3: I have no experience with the oil sprinkler system.

Inquiry 4: I saw this reinforcement in strong engines with a capacity of more then 450 BHP - and of course the second modification with these bronze bolts strikes me as a good idea. I remember the company Vmax in Borken - they have built an engine with these modification.

THanks Again Averell for your response .

1#
i will keep my actual set up ( crank with crown ) i don't have an LEH crank otherwise i would fit it .

2#
I am currently using the old standard LET system , i have the extra pump , can get my hands on the new system , cheap , reason why i was wondering about that set up .

3# Thanks for your true answer on the system modd .

4#
THanks , i was wondering if it is not making less room for the water cooling in the block walls .

Thanks again .

Hello , News Updates .

I am working on a replacement engine with some great guys on this forum .

Meanwhile , i had to do something

Got another FF ( Full Forged) engine with Balancer removal still on it , i have the removal kit from my engine and another new kit from 2 years ago , but i will run-in this engine with the OEM kit .

Placed the stock cams ( another set ) for the engine run - in , will fit the KLasen ones , once the engine bleed is completed and also with adjustable pulley/verniers .

Facial shot with the main engine in :
