South Finland,
Hello!I´m Toni Kettunen from Finland and I own Opel Turbo Vectra.Manufacturing year was 1994.I have few questions for you and I hope you can help me with my following questions.

1. I have been planned to buy new transferbox for my Vectra.I thought Swiss Hürlimanns sport transferbox would be quite nice for my use. Can you tell me how much power this box can handle or is it made for normal (204 hp) power only? Have you got experiences about this box?

2. What kind of oil can I use with my power steering? Is it better to use Dexron 3 than Dexron 2?What brand and kind of oil would you recommend? How about Mobil SHC Dexron 2??

3. How can I measure the working pressure of the hydraulic system?I know it should be 53 +- 5 bar, but how can I measure it?

4. Is the sportbox more durable than the original transferbox? The original transferbox seems to be quite rubbish. My own box went down at the point of 100000 km`s.Is it normal??And I have heard other horror stories about Opels own transferbox…and could you tell me why they are so weak?

5. Is it good for sportbox if I switch off the safety system of Opel? I mean that system: when you press brakepedal, 4x4 will be switched off over 25 Km/h speed. I have been thought if I switch off that system would the sportbox will last longer??And what about the driving pleasure and safety points in winter?

6. Would it influense about the 2 years warranty, if I tune up my engine??

7. I thought it would be wise if I assembly an oil temperature gauge for transferbox? How can I do that? Where I can put the sensor of the gauge??

I hope you will understand my english….it is´nt very good…!

Hi tiiikeri!

Welcome to our , now , international Forum !

The transmission rate front to back is moved more to the back axel at the sport 4x4 gearbox , but when you drive like MAD , you can kill any 4x4 gearbox easily by the time !

Most of the gearboxes die because of NO maintenance to the oil !

When you change your 4x4 box mechanik oil ( 0.6L only ) every 15.000 km , you make NO mistake !

Use any hydraulik oil that is abel to use in automatic transfer boxes and power steering systems , dont care the producer !

Your drivability in winter will be great , the car is able to drive like a mixture of front , back and 4x4 car , sliding is easy to control , tracktion is great ! ( i know what im saying , i use a Hürlimann Racing 4x4 in my Kadett D 4x4 Turbo !

The temperatur messurement at your gearbox is easy , please replace the oil dump skrew at the bottom of the gearbox with a VDO - Temperatur sensor M18 x 1,5 treat and install a oil temp gauge , finish !

Your 4x4 hydraulik oil Pressure can be measured by an adapter into the hydraulik oil pipe from the 4x4 hydraulik system to the 4x4 gearbox !

For any other information please contakt Reto Hürlimann direktly , he will help you !

Hello toni
Welcome to the forum!

1. I have been planned to buy new transferbox for my Vectra. I thought Swiss Hürlimanns sport transferbox would be quite nice for my use. Can you tell me how much power this box can handle or is it made for normal (204 hp) power only? Have you got experiences about this box?

I own a vectra turbo which is upgraded with ASH’s Phase 2 as well as Huerlimann’s Sport Transferbox. I did not experience any problems since the installation of the box. As previously mentioned, an important thing is to periodically change the oil of the box.

4. Is the sportbox more durable than the original transferbox? The original transferbox seems to be quite rubbish. My own box went down at the point of 100000 km`s.Is it normal??And I have heard other horror stories about Opels own transferbox…and could you tell me why they are so weak?

Cannot answer; i have it installed since last year. Normally the box should be o.k. if you follow the service instructions (this means: exchange of pressure accumulator every 6 years/90000km, oil-change). However, there is a construction problem in the box that may cause the seal of the pressure piston to leak. You will notice this damage when oil flows out of the ventilation tube from the transferbox.

5. Is it good for sportbox if I switch off the safety system of Opel? I mean that system: when you press brakepedal, 4x4 will be switched off over 25 Km/h speed. I have been thought if I switch off that system would the sportbox will last longer?? And what about the driving pleasure and safety points in winter?

There is no reason to switch off the 4x4 system manually as the brake does that itself. There won’t probably be an decrease in wear speed of the box. But there WILL be an dicrease of lifetime of your front tyres. In terms of differences in drivability between normal and Sport TB: the car tends to be more neutral in fast cornerings, the tendency of understeering is gone, and – on slippery grounds - you may cause the rear axle to drift with the throttle.

I hope you will understand my english….it is´nt very good…!

NOT true, it is very good.
Best regards

Tiiikeri - If you want to know a bit more about the Opel 4WD system then have a look at the tech section on my site. It describes it in basic terms but also has some technical stuff for those that like that.

It describes each section of the transfer box as well as the rest of the RWD section and also includes what can go wrong and why.

Regarding the brakes - there is a very good reason the 4WD is disconnected underbraking above 25km/h. This, again, is covered in that part of my site.

4WD Technical Section

Please be patient for some of the pictures. A couple are quite large but well worth it to help understand the system.

Hope it helps
