New tires - which size for best handling ?

I hope there's room for a non-german language entry in this forum

I'm about to change the tires on the Coupé, after 36.000 km, they are pretty worn down. I would like very much to change to wider tires like 225/40R17 or even 245/35R17.

What are your recommendations - is it at all possible to fit 245/35R17 on the standard 17" wheels, and is there room for them with a 30 mm lowering kit installed ?.

I have also been looking at 18" tires, 225/35R18, but I worry about the profile being so low, that it might affect the driving comfort too much with the harder spring kit installed.

I have the idea that wider tires will provide better road grip during acceleration from 0 km/h, when I get my Phase II installed (1/6-2002 - can hardly wait ...), is that correct ?

Hello,

you ask for the recommendable size for best handling. I think on the standard 17" wheels 215/40ZR17 is the best size, because the tire can`t, the german word is "walken", work (or distort) so much.

I think I understand what you mean, but isn't that just a question of keeping the right profile ?. 245/35R17 has almost the same profile, but is much wider - which I would expect to give better road grip.

Anybody - go ahead and answer in german. I should be able to read it... I really need some input from all you Opel "fahrer" out there. What would you do ?...

The problem that October means, is that the 245 tire works to much on the rims, because of this it is not a problem of the profile the only problem is that it isn´t possible to fit the wider tire so perfect to the standart rims like the 215 tires.

I will forget about the 245 tires, but will I have the same problem with 225/40 ?. I know the diameter of the wheel will change a bit, which is not good, but I think it would look nice...

Do any of you have experience with 225/35R18 ?.

I think with the standard rims the 215 tires are the best solution, if you want have wider tires i think you should buy new rims too.

I bought the new tires...

I did what you suggested. I got Goodyear Eagle F1 215/40-17 - the new model.
They have really great handling, and look good too.

225/35/18

Hallo Leute,

habe auf den ATS Competition Cup Rädern (ATS Motorsportabteilung) die 225/35/18 drauf und muß sagen die Sache ist stark. Optik toll, Handling super (mit Irmscher Fahrwerk). Allerdings wenn da nicht der Komfort wäre... ist aber mit Stickstoffüllung etwas erträglicher.
Reifen halten ca. 10000km (Conti SportContact 2), jetzt sind Pirelli PZero Rosso drauf (der neue GY F1 GSD3 und der PZero Nero waren nicht zu kriegen).
Allersings hat meine Fuhre auch 248 PS, die mit 17" nicht auf die Straße zu bringen waren...

Sorry Leute,

hab zwar Bilder aber wie kommen die hier rein? Egal, Felgen sind auch auf den DTM- Fahrzeugen drauf (genau dieselbe), kommt gut mit Irmscher-Gewinde.
Die Leistungsstufe war eine der ersten, nämlich eine Art Eigenbau von einem privaten Team das Rennen fährt (24h-Rennen, etc.). Die haben einen Gruppe A- Umbau und daraus ist die ganze Sache (inkl. Nockenwellen und Pleuel), allerdings ist die ganze Choose leider mit nix kompatibel, weder mit EDS noch mit Mantzel oder Irmscher.
Muß also warten was die noch so erfinden, alerdings haben die den KKK-K24 schon im Einsatz und das Ding ist absolut stark (muß allerdings einiges geändert werden damit es läuft --> Auspuff, LuFi, Ansaugsystem), außerdem haben die ne FI im Einsatz die man während der Fahrt programmieren kann, kostet ca. 3000,-. Leistung des Rennwagens liegt bei ca. 385PS.
Naja, man kann´s auch übertreiben, denn 4 Motoren mussten schon dran glauben, und glaubt mir, die sind sauteuer!

Eine Taschenrakete!

Das oben beschriebene Fahrzeug ist ein Astra Coupé, oder zumindest daß, was nach dem Gruppe A Umbau noch davon übrig ist. Motor ist der Z20LET, natürlich stark modifiziert und meiner Meinung nach im Straßenverkehr nicht mehr fahrbar.
Läuft aber nicht schlecht, ist wie gesagt ein Rennwagen von dem meiner ein paar Kleinigkeiten geerbt hat. Probleme gabs nur bei Opel denn die haben mir schon 2 neue Updates eingespielt (Tacho stimmte nicht mehr wegen 18") und dabei immer die Software runtergeworfen!

I think, the coupe Turbo handles best with the 215/17 "standard wheel/rim combination. Take al close look: the coupe turbo has got ESP Plus an a Traction-Control.

The rim is wide enough for a 225/17, but with 215/17 the tire-wall is bend a little bit "inside".

The profil of the tire is less able to flex right-or leftside on the rim, than the 225/17, because, the tire-wall has an "maybe 100°" degree ankle to the profile and not a 90° degree ankle or less.

And think about aquaplaning! thin tires are best choice with a good damping system. You drive the most time on streets and not on race-tracks.
