standard turbo fuel pump

I got mine checked out today, the flow rate was at 0.75 L.P.M (litres per minute) Is this right as I have been told this rate is too low? also, on acceleration the fuel flow drops to almost zero. the fuel pressure I am running at the moment is 4 bar, which will have to be reduced to 3.5 bar as I am running phase 2 chips.

Does anyone have a view on this?

Hi - the spec for LET original fuelpump Bosch ..... 008 says 60 L/h at 3 Bar.

Hi again - I have measured the flowrate of the orginal pump ...008 and that shows that each Bar higher fuelpressure lowers the flowrate with ~ 10%.

I have replaced mine with Bosch 0 580 254 984 ( original Saab 9000T ), 220 L/h at 5 Bar. This original pump is the same as the Universal Bosch pump with Nr 0 580 254 909.

the calibra has an out of tank pump so would this saab fuel pump fit? the earlier turbos used a 95litre/h and the later ones used 195litre/h? 60litre are u sure this is very low flow rate

Hi Yunis - TIS says 60L/h at 3 bar and thats also the result from my test whith the Bosch pump 0 580 254 008.

So what is the Nr of the Calibra pumps with the flowrate that you refer to ?

The Saab pump or ...909 dont fit right in, you have to bend the bracket a little.

The out of tank Bosch 0580 254 053 has a flow rate of 175/228 ltrs/hr at 5bar.

The 0580 254 909 (as suggested by Arno) has a flow rate of 148/198ltrs/hr at 5bar.

The 2 numbers represent the flow at 9.9amps and 12.5amps (or maybe 13 amps??)

I've got a 230bhp XE on throttle bodies and soon will be installing 100bhp of nitrous.

Arno can you tell me why you use 1 or 2 909's rather than the 053 becasue the 053 seems to be a better pump and the one I would go for. - I just want to make sure I'm making the right decision. :D

The 909 is 225l/h @ 5 bar according to Bosch :D

I was having this trouble before Rob with conflicting information so I went direct to the Bosch Automotive Technical department - 3 seperate times with 3 seperate people to ensure I was getting the correct info!!

Those were the figuers I was given on all three occassions by the three different people. I also have a copy of the relevant page from their technical database which they faxed me. This is a schedule of their pumps that are designed to supply between 3 and 6 bar of pressure. The 053 and 909 are on this and have the figuers as quoted above.

Perhaps the 909 might flow 225ltrs/hour @ 5bar if supplied with 20 volts but as the car electrical system puts out 14v max this will never be achieved. - also especailly as the fuel pump circuit is unlikely to put out over 12volts.

Sorry Rob but you've been fed duff information by Bosch.

So back to my question:

ARNO: why are you using the 909 instead of the 053? Is there some important reason that I have not thought of?

Hi !

Its easy : The 909 Pump is sold in germany as a 220l/h pump with 5 Bar basic pressure !

Thats the reason !

Hi!

when I read this thread first I asked some of my friends with modified cars, what fuel pumps they use.
For an Audi RS2 with MTM / Sperrer tuning up to 450hp@2bar above atmosphere, they use a 909!
A Toyota Supra MK3 3.0 turbo uses the 909 too, up to 400hp
A Honda Integra Type-R turbo uses two of unknown type @ about 150l/h and 4 bar
I use the 909 in my Cavalier turbo

So i think the 909 is ok. Stronger pumps maybe wouldn't work with our fuel lines, because they are to stong. I already had a burst line with the 909.

Much more important than the flow rate of the pump is to get the fuel to the pump!

Blademage- yes I know alot of high spec cars use the 909 but I can't help being confussed by what Bosch has told me, which is that the 053 has a higher flow rate. We'll see what Ash's comments are when he's looked at my list.

Oh by the way, teh lotus Esprit uses the 053, as does the Porsch 911 turbo.

I'm not worried by burst pipes and problems getting fuel to the pump as I have a Facet Red Top race pump bringing fuel from teh tank to the engine bay where it goes into a swirl pot and to the injection pump. All my fuel hoses are Aeroquip stainless steel braided lines (of the correct sizes) and all connections are made using -JIC connectors.

No chance of burst/leaking pipes with that lot! :D

Cheers Giles for the Info, but i am happy that if an Audi RS2 doing 450 bhp uses one my 300+ bhp cally will be more than happy with this pump :p :wink:

Thats ok Rob. I would agree that if a (single) 909 pump is used on a 450bhp Audi then it should be fine for you.

However...

Do you know if the Audi uses just one of the 909 pumps?

I should think it must use 2 of them as the phase 4 uses 2 for 400bhpish, in which case the Audi must definatly use 2 of them for 450bhp don't you think????

And as I said to Arno in my email to him - the 053 over in the UK costs on average 10% more than the 909 does.

I know this doesn't neccissarily mean it's a 'higher' performance pump (it could be they sell more 909's so have an economy of scale), but it does at fuel to the fire.

- I'm sure we'll find out for certain..................
